What can I expect from the first session?
The first sessions can naturally feel uncomfortable. Speaking to a stranger and talking about difficult issues isn’t easy. Many people contact a therapist when feeling desperate and this can leave clients feeling isolated and vulnerable. It’s a good time to unload and reflect with someone impartial. Below are some of the issues and questions that are often asked in the first session:
- “Why have you decided to come to therapy now?”
- Stating the concerns you would like to address in therapy.
- Exploring your expectations and hopes for this process.
- Taking a family history.
- Taking a history of your relationship (couples therapy)
- An opportunity to ask any questions or worries you might have about therapy.
The opportunity to discuss fees, days and times and location of on going therapy
How long does a session last?
Each counselling session lasts 50 minutes with the first being an assessment session.
The session will allow you to discuss and identify the issues you need to address. If you decide to go forward and commit to couple’s therapy, a regular time with be arranged together. I also offer double session which last 100 minutes. Double sessions work well for clients who travel or cannot commit to weekly sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
I require 48 hours notice of cancellation otherwise I charge.
